Do I need a credit card at any point?

No. Not to build, not to publish, and not for the free account. A card is only ever involved if you decide to put the site on your own domain.

What happens after 48 hours?

An unclaimed site comes down and its address is released. Claiming it with a free account at any point before or after puts it straight back at the same address, permanently.

Will you email me?

We have no address to email until you sign in, and signing in is one click with Google. There is no newsletter attached to it.

What do you store while I'm anonymous?

A cookie that identifies your browser as the owner of the one project you made, and the project itself. That is what lets you come back to it in the same browser. The privacy policy has the detail.

What if I close the tab before publishing?

Your draft is saved in that browser, so reopening this page picks it up where you left off. It is on that device only, so a different computer starts fresh.
